Injury Lawyers Who Truly Care

Traumatic Brain Injuries Can Cause Severe Setbacks

A traumatic brain injury changes lives forever. A person suffering from such an injury may lose his or her cognitive abilities, suffer speech impairments and have difficulty drawing simple conclusions.

The effects on the sufferer’s emotions can be even more severe. The injured person can experience wide swings in emotion and make angry outbursts over the most trivial things. At these times, family members can hardly recognize the loving person they used to know.

“Your loved one has suffered a grave setback in life. Our attorneys and staff will stand by you in your time of need, providing counsel, emotional support and vigorous advocacy.”Daniel L. Crandall

What Is A Traumatic Brain Injury?

A traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a severe brain injury that happens when a significant force is applied to a person’s head or body.

There are two main categories of TBIs: penetrating and nonpenetrating. A penetrating TBI is when a foreign object or material pierces a person’s skull and enters their brain tissue. A nonpenetrating TBI is when an external event moves a person’s brain inside their skull. Sometimes, a person may sustain both a penetrating and nonpenetrating TBI from the same accident.

Traumatic brain injuries can range from mild, like a concussion, to severe, which can result in permanent disabilities or death.

What Are The Symptoms Of A Traumatic Brain Injury?

Symptoms of TBIs appear generally fit into three categories:

  • Physical: headaches, seizures, vomiting, disparate pupil dilation, vision issues, slurred speech, or clear fluid drainage from the nose or ears
  • Cognitive: Confusion, agitation, mood swings, decreased or loss of consciousness, disruptions in sleep patterns, fatigue, poor memory, inability to concentrate, or difficulty making decisions
  • Perceptive: Increased sensitivity to sensory input, vertigo, bad taste in the mouth, or ringing ears

Some symptoms of TBIs appear immediately, and some can take weeks. Getting prompt medical attention after suffering head trauma is crucial, or severe injuries may go unnoticed and cause further damage.

What Impact Do Traumatic Brain Injuries Have On Survivors?

The impact of a TBI can be staggering. Regardless of severity, at the very least, survivors will have some medical bills and likely miss time from work. The more severe the injury, the more significant the impact. Survivors could incur millions in medical bills, become permanently disabled, be unable to work, need special equipment, vehicles, and home modifications, or may even need to move into assisted living.

Pursuing a personal injury claim can provide justice to TBI survivors and their families and compensation to support their recovery or ongoing needs. The attorneys at Crandall & Katt, Attorneys at Law, are here to help.
