Drug maker cited for illegal off label promotions in Virginia

On Aug. 14, two counties in the commonwealth of Virginia received settlements totaling $1.3 million from Abbott Laboratories, the manufacturer of the prescription medication Depakote. The settlement was based on an accusation that Abbott Laboratories promoted the medication for uses not approved by the Food and Drug Administration. The counties involved in the settlement were Smyth and Tazewell.

ER observation can reduce CT scans for children's head injuries

Virginia parents may be interested in a study that shows how the frequency of the expensive tests that their children undergo when they've sustained a minor blunt head injury can be reduced. Study results indicate that the need for computed tomography scans is reduced when a child spends more time under observation in the emergency room.

Guardian caps versus concussions

Guardian Caps, padded shells made of polyurethane fabric, fit over helmets to reduce impacts to the head. The caps are in use in 35 states, including Virginia, but there's a controversy over whether they meet helmet certification standards set by the National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment or whether they are out of bounds under the standards.

Virginia man faces prison for wrongful death car crash

A Virginia man has learned the hard way that drinking and driving don't mix. He pleaded guilty to DUI involuntary manslaughter and hit-and-run involving a death in connection with a fatal car accident that occurred on December 23, 2012.
