Virginia man charged with DUI and manslaughter

According to Henrico Police, a two-vehicle accident happened at about 1 a.m. on Dec. 13. A motorist was stopped at the intersection of East Parham and Chamberlayne Roads in northbound lanes. As the driver advanced her vehicle into the intersection, a vehicle traveling east on Parham went straight into the intersection, hitting the first vehicle on the driver's side. The driver of the northbound vehicle died at the scene. The driver of the second vehicle was transported to VCU Medical Center to be treated for his injuries after the car wreck.

An investigation ensued, and warrants were issued for the arrest of the driver of the eastbound vehicle. The man was charged with both DUI and involuntary manslaughter. The warrants were served on Dec. 26, and the man was taken into custody. He is scheduled to appear at a hearing in late January.

Police indicate that, as of the date of the arrest, an investigation of the crash scene was still ongoing. According to court records, the alleged DUI driver had faced a variety of charges in the past. One was for possession of marijuana, and another was for driving with improper tail lights. Court records also indicate that he had been charged with public intoxication in the past as well.

Survivors of the deceased motorist can consider filing a wrongful death lawsuit in such a case. If the victim had been financially supporting one or more family members, compensation that covers that support may be sought through that claim in civil court.
