Virginia teen suffers head trauma during stunt

With sports becoming more and more serious -- even at a young age -- more attention is being focused on brain injuries. Playing on a sports team is not the only way that people end up with head trauma, however. Sports like snowboarding, biking and skateboarding are a common cause of head injuries, as well as falls and car accidents. Regardless of the way the injury was received, it is important to get it treated as quickly as possible in order to have the greatest chance of avoiding long-lasting damage.

In Virginia, a young teenager was recently taken to a hospital by helicopter after he fell off of a car. He was reportedly riding on the trunk of the car, trying to make a video of the ride, but fell from the car when the driver turned. As a result of the fall, he suffered a severe head injury and remains in critical condition. The accident occurred in a parking lot late on a Tuesday evening.

In part due to the resiliency of the human body, many people underestimate the potential severity of a brain injury or head trauma. The reality is that a brain injury can affect a person's life -- as well as the lives of their family members -- for years to come in many different ways. In many cases, the victim can experience a complete change in personality or emotional issues that can impact personal and family relationships. In addition, many brain injuries require long-term treatment or rehabilitation, which can be very costly, especially when potentially dealing with the loss of the victim's income.

Whether the injury is due to the negligence of a person who caused a car accident, another third party or a medical professional who failed to properly diagnose or treat the brain injury, victims and their family members may be able to recover needed compensation in a personal injury lawsuit. Although the money will not erase the harm done or return everything to the way it once was, it can help a family regain financial stability and enjoy relative security after the traumatic loss.
