Defective products can pose serious dangers to children

There were 74,900 injuries that required hospitalization during 2013 involving nursery products for children under the age of five. During 2012, there were approximately 77,900 injuries that required treatment of children under the age of five in emergency rooms for nursery product-related injuries. In 2011, there were approximately 74,100 injuries that required treatment of children under the age of five in emergency rooms for nursery product-related injuries.

During the 3-year period ranging from 2011 to 2013, the average was 75,600 injuries that required treatment of children under the age of five in emergency rooms for nursery product-related injuries. There were a number of children's products associated with the injuries, including infant carriers and car seat carriers; cribs and mattresses; carriages and strollers; and high chairs, which accounted for around 66 percent of the injuries. Overall, falls were the leading cause of injury. While the head and the face were most commonly injured, lacerations, contusions, abrasions and internal organ injuries accounted for 71 percent of all injuries.

Fatal accidents, unfortunately, also occurred involving dangerous and defective products, such as dangerous children's product. From the period ranging from 2009 to 2011, there was an average of 112 deaths per year associated with nursery products. There were a total of 336 deaths of children five and under associated with nursery products from 2009 to 2011. Of those deaths, 87 percent were associated with cribs and mattresses, basinets and cradles, playpens, infant carriers and car seat carriers, baby baths and bath seats. The deaths were caused by asphyxia, strangulation and drowning, among other causes.

A dangerous or defective product, especially a dangerous or defective children's product, can cause devastation for family. Because of the serious nature of dangerous children's products, there are a number of legal protections in place for families to be familiar with if they or their child have been the victims of a dangerous or defective product.
