Understanding the causes and costs of brain injuries in Virginia

Understanding brain injuries is important for brain injury victims in Virginia and throughout the country. Traumatic brain injuries are a concern in Virginia and nationally. The Virginia Department of Health reports that, annually, 28,000 Virginia residents suffer brain injuries. Traumatic brain injuries contribute to greater than 1,400 deaths and result in approximately 4,000 visits to the hospital in Virginia each year.

In addition, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, during 2010, there were approximately 2.5 million visits to emergency rooms, hospitalizations or deaths associated with traumatic brain injuries. From 2006 to 2010, car accidents accounted for 14 percent of traumatic brain injuries. A number of different types of traumatic accidents, including car accidents and bicycle accidents, as well as other types of traumatic accidents can lead to traumatic brain injuries.

Victims of brain injuries can face challenging recoveries that can include long recovery times. Associated with a long period of recovery can be significant medical care costs. Future medical care treatment associated with a brain injury can also be costly for victims of brain injuries and for their families. Victims of brain injuries may also face challenges associated with everyday activities and working following a traumatic brain injury which may create financial strain on victims and their families.

Victims who have wrongfully suffered a brain injury, such as in a car accident, may be able to seek compensation for their injuries including medical expenses, future medical costs, lost wages, lost-earning capacity and pain and suffering damages. It can be vital for victims of brain injuries and their families to be familiar with the legal remedies available to them when they have suffered a brain injury because of the high cost of brain injuries.
