What are the potential impacts of a rollover accident?

Rollover accidents are the greatest risk involved in SUV, truck and minivan accidents. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that there are greater than 280,000 rollover accidents annually and greater than 10,000 fatalities annually as a result. In general, SUVs can be more top heavy and more likely to be involved in a rollover accident.

The stability of a vehicle while it turns directly relates to rollover accidents and a vehicle's propensity to rollover. The stability of a vehicle is influenced by its track width and center of gravity. A narrow track width and high center of gravity can create instability if the vehicle is required to make sharp or fast turns. Rollover risk is most pronounced in SUVs and 4-wheel drive trucks. A rollover rating system was introduced in 2001 by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to help keep the public safe from rollovers.

Rollover accidents can result in serious injuries and, unfortunately, on many occasions, in fatalities. Victims of rollover accidents may unexpectedly find themselves facing frustrating challenges they did not plan on including paying for medical bills and an inability to work because of their injuries. Surviving family members of victims killed in a rollover accident may similarly face financial and emotional challenges associated with a rollover accident. Products liability legal resources, including personal injury and wrongful death claims, may be able to help victims receive compensation for the harm suffered based on the circumstances surrounding the rollover accident.

When a car accident such as a rollover accident occurs, a number of different parties may be liable. As a result, it is important for victims of rollover accidents and their families to be familiar with the legal resources and remedies available to them when harmed in a rollover accident.
