The CRANDALL AND KATT SCHOLARSHIP- 2019 invites essays on the topic, "What will the legal future hold for driverless cars that are involved in accidents?" There is considerable interest in this technology, perhaps due to the surge in distracted driving accidents. In fact, a recent slogan characterizes phone addicts as the new drunk drivers. The comparison is apt, as the delayed reaction time of a driver who takes his or her eyes and concentration off the road could be as dangerous, if not more, as an intoxicated driver's responses.

Crandall and Katt, Attorneys at Law, is extremely proud to announce that they have awarded their 2018 Crandall & Katt scholarship to Salem native and Glenvar High School graduate, Kelsey Hager.

Kelsey's 300-word essay of "What Would Really Make Drivers Stop Texting While Driving?" impressed the judging committee with her insight and originality in submitting her recommendation. Her suggestion was to require all future carmakers to install a "cellphone disruption" signal that would interfere with texting while the car was in motion.

At Crandall & Katt, Attorneys at Law, we understand the importance of an advanced education, and we know how difficult it can be for students and their families to pay for college. The cost of higher education continues to rise, which can place unnecessary stress on students.

In light of these challenges, our lawyers want to help students pursue a higher education and reduce their financial burden. We are pleased to offer a $500 scholarship to a local high school senior-to-be. Recipients may use the scholarship for educational purposes beyond high school.

The scholarship will be awarded to a student who is planning to enroll in either a college, community college, university or trade school.

To apply for the scholarship, students must submit a 300-word minimum essay addressing this question: "What will the legal future hold for driverless cars that are involved in accidents?"

For 2019, applications close on June 12, 2019. The winner of the scholarship will be announced on July 9, 2019. Watch this page for information regarding the 2019 scholarship.

To be eligible for the Crandall And Katt scholarship, applicants must reside in Virginia — south of Interstate 64 and west of Route 29.
