Understanding ATV-related deaths and injuries

During a 20 year period from 1982 to 2012, the Consumer Product Safety Commission, also known as the CPSC, received reports of 12,391 ATV-related fatalities. While ATV-related fatality reporting is ongoing from 2009 to 2012, the CPSC received reports of 353 ATV-related fatalities in 2012, 554 ATV-related fatalities in 2011, 657 ATV-related fatalities in 2010 and 718 ATV-related fatalities in 2009. In 2008, for which reporting is considered complete, there were an estimated 845 ATV-related fatalities.

During 2011, there were an estimated 107,500 ATV-related injuries treated in emergency rooms in the United States, and during 2012 there were an estimated 107,900 ATV-related injuries treated in emergency rooms in the United States. A number of the estimated 2012 ATV-related injuries were diagnosed as abrasions, contusions and fractures. Of the estimated 2012 ATV-related injuries, 27 percent affected the head or neck; 29 percent affected the arm from the shoulder down; 22 percent affected the torso; and 21 percent affected the leg.

When an individual has been injured by a dangerous or defective product, such as a defective ATV, they may suffer a number of damages associated with the harm. Damages can include physical, financial and emotional damages.

A number of different parties, ranging from the manufacturer to the wholesaler or retailer of a defective product, may be liable to compensate the victim for damages suffered. Injuries and harm suffered in an ATV accident can be serious, which is why it can be important that victims injured by a defective ATV are familiar with the legal protections that may be available to them when harmed.
