Rehabilitative care following a brain injury can be overwhelming and costly. In addition, care for traumatic brain injuries can be financially and emotionally draining. Victims of brain injuries and their families may struggle with the uncertainty a brain injury causes and may wonder how brain injuries are treated following trauma, such as a car accident.

The goals for rehabilitative care and brain injury treatment following a brain injury include stabilizing the medical and rehabilitation issues of the victim following the brain injury; preventing complications that can arise following a brain injury; restoring functional abilities that may have been lost following a brain injury; providing strategies and tools to help the victim adapt following a brain injury; and helping families with the changes associated with the transition to home care following a brain injury.

Victims may initially struggle with basic activities and personal care following a brain injury and may be at risk of falling or may experience forgetfulness. Changes in thinking and behavior may also occur and can be addressed by specialists. Victims of brain injuries may suffer from poor memory, poor ability to concentrate, poor decision-making abilities, impulsive behavior and experience disorientation, communication, language or comprehension difficulties. A variety of professionals may assist in the recovery process including mental health specialists, nursing staff, physical therapists and occupational therapists.

Because brain injury victims can require help with basic everyday activities and needs and care can be costly, it is important for victims of brain injuries to be familiar with their rights if they have suffered their injury in a car accident or other type of accident. Victims and their families should be aware that a negligent party, such as a negligent driver, may be responsible to compensate them for the damages they have suffered as a result of a brain injury.
