Fatal pedestrian accident occurs in Norfolk

In Virginia and other states across the nation, motorists encounter pedestrians. This could be at a crosswalk, in a residential area, near a sidewalk or in a parking lot. No matter where a pedestrian is, a motorist is expected to uphold their duty to follow the rules of the road a drive safely. Failure to do so could result in a serious or even fatal car accident.

Authorities in Virginia were recently dispatched to a pedestrian accident that took place near a Greek festival in Norfolk. The accident took place at the 7200 block of Granby Street. Based on preliminary reports, the 57-year-old woman was crossing Granby Street in a crosswalk where the street intersects with Fife Street. This is when the driver of a Toyota SUV struck the pedestrian.

Both the driver and the passenger remained at the scene following the crash. The pedestrian was transported to the hospital for her injuries; however, she was later pronounced dead. An initial investigation reveals that authorities do not believe that speed or alcohol were a factor in the crash. Once the investigation is complete, law enforcement will be able to determine the cause and liability for the fatal pedestrian accident.

The aftermath of a fatal pedestrian accident can be emotional, tragic and gruesome. Loved ones of those killed in such a tragic accident may not fully understand what they can do to overcome the grief and financial harm caused by the accident. A wrongful death claim could help hold a negligent motorist liable. It could also help address the losses suffered, such as medical bills, funeral costs, pain and suffering, loss of companionship and other damages.
