What injuries are caused by a seatbelt in a car crash?

It is very common for motorist and passengers in Virginia and elsewhere to take steps to guard against a car accident. While motorist can drive safe and occupants can properly use safety restraints, this does not mean they are not immune from car accidents or injuries resulting from a collision. Even a careful and safe driver could suffer serious accident injuries if struck by another vehicle, causing the driver or passengers to suffer pain and damages.

A seatbelt is designed to prevent and reduce the severity of injuries in the event of a car accident. However, an occupant in a vehicle involved in a crash could suffer seat belt injuries. Although seatbelts do save lives, saving around 13,000 lives in 2014, it can also contribute to the injuries suffered in a car accident.

When the body is restrained and experiences a sudden jolt of force, such as those caused in a collision, these forces from different directions could cause bodily harm. The harm suffered is dependent on the degree of force. However, a seatbelt could cause injuries such as bruising, whiplash, injuries to the abdomen, chest injuries and even internal bleeding. The severity of these injuries is not only dependent on the amount of force and direction of the force but could also depend on the age of the victim or if a female victim was pregnant at the time of the crash.

No one expects to be involved in an automobile collision. While most people wear seatbelts to protect themselves from injuries in the event of a crash, these safety devices unfortunately do not guard against all type of injuries. When a negligent driver is to blame for a crash, it is important that victims understand what can be done to protect their rights. A personal injury action could help hold the negligent driver accountable. Additionally, it could help a victim recover the compensation he or she is entitled to for the injuries and losses suffered.
