Teenager’s story shows long aftermath of brain injury

Traumatic brain injuries can change a whole family’s life in an instant. They are sometimes hard to detect, hard to treat, slow to heal and can lead to permanent changes in personality and cognitive ability. Some of the worst brain injuries lead to permanent, complete disability.

A recent story about a Virginia teenager suffering from a traumatic brain injury illustrates how these injuries can change families forever. The 17-year-old was driving near her home in Virginia Beach in December when she was involved in a serious accident involving another car. She has been in the hospital ever since, and has required 15 surgeries. For months, she was barely conscious. More recently, her condition has improved, and she can answer yes or no questions. She will have to stay in the hospital longer for more rehabilitative treatment.

The girl had been an A student in high school, and was taking five AP classes. She was a member of her school’s crew team, ran cross country, and participated in a debate team. Her mother, who is herself a doctor, now hopes that her daughter will be able to walk again.

It’s heartbreaking to think of what accident victims and their families go through when they face the long aftermath of traumatic brain injury. In addition to the physical and emotional effects they face, these injuries are enormously expensive to treat.

When a person is injured through the negligence of another driver, they can hold the driver liable for their damages. Since the damages in brain injury cases are likely to be extremely high, it is especially important that the injured and their families seek out help from an experienced attorney who can help them fight for every bit of compensation they so desperately need.
