Virginia shopping center damaged by trash truck crash

We wouldn't be able to buy much at our local grocery stores or clothing shops if it weren't for trucks. The garbage wouldn't be taken away and the oil tanks wouldn't be refilled either. The nation relies on trucking to survive, but that doesn't change the potential danger of heavy vehicles.

Truck crashes are among the most devastating and destructive class of road accidents, and the sheer weight and speed involved in a collision with one can almost guarantee damage and injury. Although the most likely victims of these crashes are other motorists, no one is safe if a driver loses control of a truck.

A shopping center in Spotsylvania was severely damaged and one person was injured when a trash truck plowed into a storefront. At least one other vehicle was involved in the incident, which damaged a restaurant so badly that the overhang had to be shored up by emergency service workers before the truck's driver could be evacuated.

The cause of the crash was not immediately evident. Garbage truck drivers, as well as commercial semi operators, must be licensed and trained in Virginia. Accidents that are proven to be the fault of the driver may result in civil and criminal punishment to correct the situation and ensure it does not happen again.

Victims of truck accidents and the families of people killed by heavy vehicles have the right to sue for financial damages in civil court. Although this result may seem cold comfort after a tragedy, an attorney can help families move on and deal with the consequences of a crash.
