Research out of the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute found that text messaging increases the risk of a car accident by 23 times over when a driver is not distracted.

Distracted driving is a serious concern on our roadways today. Distracted driving includes all behaviors that remove a driver's attention from the roadway which can, of course, be dangerous and present a danger to other motorists, passengers in other vehicles and pedestrians. In addition to removing the driver's focus from the roadway, distracted driving behaviors can also remove the driver's eyes from the roadway and hands from the wheel.

Hit-and-run accident in Virginia claims life of pedestrian

Car accidents can take away everything a family holds dear. A pedestrian was recently struck and killed in a fatal hit-and-run car accident in a neighboring community northeast of the Roanoke City area. The 21-year old victim was killed after his vehicle left the roadway and he called family members for help. After calling family members, the victim returned to the roadway and as he was walking along it, he was hit and killed.

Victims of texting and driving have legal options to be aware of

In Virginia, texting while driving is against the law. Drivers, however, continue to engage in texting while driving which can cause serious accidents, injuries and even fatalities. The law recognizes the harm distracted drivers can cause and the harm victims and their families may suffer following a distracted driving accident.
