No one expects to be in an accident. Even more so, no one expects to suffer a serious injury, especially when the accident tis minor and a victim does not believe they have suffered any serious injuries. However, some accident injuries can be delayed. Take for example a head injury. Trauma to the brain is not always apparent immediately following a car accident. A victim may show sign and symptoms several hours or even days following the incident. A brain injury is a serious injury that could result in long-term issues.

While a concussion is considered to be a minor head injury, the reality is that when a person suffers multiple concussions in a lifetime, this can have irreversible effects on the brain. Even more so, concussions can often go overlooked, resulting in delayed medical treatment. Thus, the effects of a brain injury, mild or severe, could impact a victim for a lifetime.

A brain injury, no mater the type, could cause a wide range of short or long-term affects to a person’s functions. This can include their thinking, such as memory and reasoning and sensation, like sight and balance. It could also impact language, affecting communication, expression and understanding. A brain injury could also affect emotion, causing depression, anxiety, personality changes, aggression, acting out and social inappropriateness.

Study have found that a traumatic brain injury could cause a person to suffer epilepsy and even increase his or her risk for conditions like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and other brain disorders. Studies also indicate that roughly 75 percent of all TBIs that occur each year are concussions or a form of mild TBI. It was also found that repeated mild TBIs could result in cumulative neurological and cognitive defects. Additionally, repeated mild TBIs in a short period of time could be catastrophic or even fatal.

A brain injury is a serious injury to suffer. It has the ability to impact an accident victim in many facets of their life. This injury often requires much time to heal and ongoing medical care. This can result in challenges when it comes to a person’s education and even holding a job. The damages that could befall a victim can be extensive, making it important for them to understand their rights and options. A personal injury action could significantly help a victim with the damages and losses caused by a brain injury.
